PURPOSE OF THE CATHOLIC SCHOOL

Parents are the first educators of their children and have the obligation and the right to ensure an adequate education for their children, consistent with their rights and obligations and with their beliefs and values.

The Catholic School is not simply an alternative to a Government school. It is different because it is Catholic. It must offer an authentic Catholic Vision.

Annunciation’s enrolment policy supports the Policy Statement of the Archdiocese of Melbourne Enrolment Policy, in ensuring that Catholic children are provided with an education of faith.

SELECTION CRITERIA

In order to maintain the Catholic Ethos of Catholic schools, the intake of students should not exceed 7% of the preparatory students as stated in the Archdiocese of Melbourne, Enrolment Policy for Catholic Schools.

Enrolments are accepted on the basis of the following priorities:

1.   Catholic* children residing within the boundaries of the Annunciation Parish Primary School.

2.   Siblings of students at Annunciation.

3.   Catholic children residing outside the boundaries of Annunciation Primary School.

Other children will be accepted into the school providing space is available.

4.   Unbaptised children of Catholic parents.

5.   Children belonging to an autocephelous Orthodox faith.

6.   Children belonging to another Christian faith.

7.   Children belonging to a non Christian religion or no religion.

If there is a situation of an excess number of students enrolling into a year level, especially at Prep, the following procedure would occur:

1.   Discuss the situation with Annunciation’s Consultative Committee.

2.   Prioritise enrolments using selection criteria.

3.   Consultation between the Principal and Parish Priest.

As a matter of courtesy, contact is made with the current school of children requesting enrolment, from one Catholic school to Annunciation, or from a D.O.E. school to Annunciation. This occurs prior to enrolment, and once the students commence, communication is made with the past school to obtain transfer forms.

* For the purposes of clarity, “Catholic” is here defined as one who has received Baptism in the Catholic Church or in an Eastern rite church in communion with the Apostolic. A certificate of Baptism is required as proof and will be photocopied and kept on file at the school.

ENROLMENT PROCEDURES

Application for enrolment in existing classes may be submitted at any time, and will be considered according to the selection criteria if there are places available. An interview is required before any offer of enrolment is made.

Application for Prep Enrolment

1.   Application for Prep enrolment for the following year are made available in May of the current year commence in May. A brief information pamphlet is also made available on request.

2.   The Principal reviews the applications and sets interview times (July – December) Interviews can be used for meeting new families and seeking further clarification about an enrolment. Both parents and child are asked to attend this interview.

3.   Principal offers enrolment places to successful applicants.

4.   Any additional enrolments throughout the year need to have an interview before a firm place can be offered.

CONDITIONS OF ENROLMENT

Prior to enrolling children, parents must be prepared to provide the school with all the relevant and necessary information about their child. For example, if a child has a recognised disability (physical, learning, emotional etc.) or other problems of a serious nature, the Principal must be informed of the details.

Required documents are:

1.   Baptism Certificate (if applicable).

2.   Birth Certificate as proof of age*.

3.   Immunisation Certificate.

Failure to do so could:

  • Invalidate the enrolment.

  • Reduce the school’s opportunities to gain appropriate support/advice from Government or Catholic Education Office Resources.

  • Impair or restrict a child’s access to the best education for them.

Therefore, your cooperation in attending to these details is greatly appreciated.

PERMISSION TO CONTACT CURRENT KINDERGARTEN OR PREVIOUS SCHOOL

In the case of children beginning school, some of the information may seek to establish the child's readiness for school. (information gathered will be held in confidence by the school).

* Minimum Age - A child must be at least 5 years old by 30th April during the year in which admission is sought.
