Curriculum

In 2006 the Victorian government introduced the Victorian Essential Learning Standards [VELS] in its revised form as our curriculum framework, replacing the Curriculum and Standards Framework [CSFII]. The VELS describe what is essential for students to achieve from Years Prep to 10 in Victorian schools.

The main change this brought was to recognize that as well as traditional and still important core subjects such as Maths and English, there are also important skills and understandings the students of today, [and adult citizens and employees of tomorrow] need to acquire to succeed in an increasingly complex and challenging world, that cannot best be addressed as single subject areas. The structure of the VELS reflects this.

The VELS is organized into three strands, as briefly described below;

DISCIPLINE BASED LEARNING.
The domains of this strand include the traditional disciplines of;
English,
Mathematics,
The Arts,
Science,
Humanities [History, Geography, Economics],
Languages Other Than English [LOTE], which at Annunciation is currently Italian, and in Catholic schools Religious Education.

PHYSICAL, PERSONAL AND SOCIAL LEARNING.
This strand is organized into the four domains of;
Health and Physical Education,
Interpersonal Development,
Personal Learning, and
Civics and Citizenship.
While domains such as Health, Physical Education and Civics & Citizenship can at least partly be treated as ‘subject areas’, others such as Personal Learning and Interpersonal Development will often best be addressed in the context of learning in other areas.

INTERDISCIPLINARY LEARNING
The four domains of;
Communication,
Information and Communications Technology,
Thinking Processes, and
Design, Creativity and Technology,
while they have skills needing to be specifically taught, will best be served within other units of work, for example within Science and Humanities Inquiry Units of work, or during English, or Religious Education units.

The links on the left reflect the VELS structure. When fully revised they will give some more detail as to the nature of each of these Strands and Domains, and our school’s approaches to introducing and implementing them into our teaching and learning programs. For now some still speak of the CSFII Key Learning Area model but will be updated soon.
