About
Annunciation is one of two Catholic Primary
schools in the Parish of Kingsville/Brooklyn. Our sister school in the
parish is Corpus Christi, Kingsville.
Annunciation is situated in Nolan Ave. - a quiet location off Millers
Road. We border with St Leo the Great Parish, Altona North on Blackshaws
Road (north of Millers Rd) and Cyclamen Ave. (east of Millers Rd). The
school is fortunate to have an abundance of playing space, both all use
weather areas and fine weather grassed areas.
Annunciation School was established in the late 1950’s to provide a
second school in the Kingsville Parish. The early school catered for up
to 200 students, many of the children attending from the migrant hostel
on Millers Rd. The hostel was closed in the early 1970’s and since that
time the school enrolment has ranged from 85 to 110. We currently have
close to 100
students enrolled. The Josephite Nuns administered the school up until
1980. Since that time we have had four principals: Miss Lorraine Buntz,
Mr Brian Booley, Mr Dan Mogg and Mr Mark Freeman.
The school buildings have recently been refurbished, and the building of
a Community Room adjacent to the school building and attached to the
church has been a valuable and welcome addition to our facilities,
hosting everything from assemblies to Physical Education in extreme
weather to social and community functions. The school has a
diverse population with over fifteen nationalities represented among our
families. Most children were born in Australia, and many children
benefit from exposure and use of another language at home.
In addition to the standard Commonwealth and State Government funding
the school receives special funding for Literacy. Presently we have 4
classes: P/1, 1/2, 3/4 and 5/6. We expect to have 4 classes into the
foreseeable future. These classes are decided upon in early December
when enrolments and funding is known for the following year.
All classes are taught a comprehensive curriculum developed using the
new Victorian Essential Learning Standards [VELS] as well as Religious Education in the
Catholic Faith as set by the Archdiocese of Melbourne.
Complementing the 4 classroom teachers are the Principal, Literacy
Specialist, Library Technician, Italian teacher, Physical Education and
Performing Arts Specialists, Integration Aides and Office Administration
Staff. |
